測定するときは、両手に電気ペンを持ち、絶縁物の上に立ってください。 2本の電気ペンを2本のワイヤーに同時に接触させます。 2本の電気ペンの明るさが低い場合は、この時点で測定された2本のワイヤーが同相（両方の相ワイヤー）であることを意味します。 2本のペンの明るさが高い場合は、この時点で測定された2本の線の位相がずれていることを意味します（1本の位相線と1本の中性線）。 このようにして、三相-相回路の3相ワイヤと1つの中性線をすばやく遮蔽できます。
